It is more than discipline. Discipline is necessary but insufficient. All of my impulses are to reduce pain and expand happiness. I suspect I’m assessing my life with faulty tools. At the very least, they are tools I have constructed from the materials within a self-serving culture. What does it mean for me to pick up my cross and deny myself?

I’ve never liked rules that basically protect us from ourselves. Being smart and disciplined works better than a double-edged rule.
